COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

Explain the types and severity of community problems caused by reintegrating large numbers of inmates returning from long-term incarceration in punishment-oriented facilities who have received minimal educational, vocational, and rehabilitation services.

Explain the symptom clusters of the Post Incarceration Syndrome (PICS) including:

Institutionalized Personality Traits

Antisocial Personality Traits (ASPT)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Social Sensory Deprivation Syndrome

Reactive Substance Abuse Disorders

Explain the general treatment strategies and community treatment strategies and community support services needed to deal with each cluster of symptoms.

Explain a five-point plan for preparing communities to respond to the challenge of returning inmates suffering from PICS.
